STRUCTURAL BUG ART: SOFTWARE FAILURE, STRUCTURE AND EVOLUTION
Digital sculpture through deliberately induced and manipulated software failure.
Structural BUG Art grew from a long-term question in my digital sculpture practice: what can sculpture become when software failure is treated not as a defect to repair, but as a condition for structural change?
I began documenting digital sculpture experiments and 3D-printed prototypes in 2014. Over time, software failure moved from an unexpected event to something I deliberately induced, manipulated, and allowed to evolve. In 2026, I formally named this practice Structural BUG Art.
My current definition is:
Sculptural structures evolved through deliberately manipulated software failures.
SOFTWARE FAILURE AS A SCULPTURAL CONDITION
In 3D modeling and digital sculpture, failure can appear as rupture, displacement, stretching, intersection, open surfaces, topology collapse, or structural drift.
These conditions are usually repaired. My practice begins by doing the opposite: I deliberately induce software failure and keep working with it.
The purpose is not to display an error. The purpose is to alter sculptural structure.
A body can fracture, detach, stretch, intersect, open, or lose its original organization. During this process, new relationships between line, plane, volume, void, connection, and suspension can emerge.
The result is no longer simply a damaged figure. It becomes a new sculptural structure generated through software failure.
INDUCE · MANIPULATE · EVOLVE
The method is simple:
INDUCE — deliberately induce software failure.
MANIPULATE — actively manipulate the failure.
EVOLVE — allow the sculptural structure to continue evolving.
This process can be repeated many times. A single source body may therefore produce multiple structural states across different cycles.
What matters is not one accidental result, but continuous structural evolution.
FROM BODY TO STRUCTURE
The human body is often my starting source because it provides a stable and recognizable sculptural framework.
As software failure is repeatedly induced and manipulated, anatomy gradually loses its original authority. Surfaces separate, internal relationships become exposed, and new spatial connections appear.
The figure can eventually move beyond anatomy toward a more autonomous sculptural structure.
This transition—from body to structure—is central to Structural BUG Art.
DIGITAL SCULPTURE AS ITS OWN MEDIUM
Digital sculpture is not only a faster way to model forms that could already be made in clay, stone, or bronze.
Software has its own structural conditions: topology, computation, duplication, recursion, non-manifold geometry, open surfaces, penetration, collapse, and instant transformation.
These conditions belong to the digital medium itself.
Structural BUG Art uses software failure as a sculptural operation within that medium. The work is therefore not based on simulating traditional material behavior, but on allowing digital conditions to produce forms that could not emerge in the same way through conventional sculptural processes.
DIGITAL STRUCTURE AND PHYSICAL FORM
Structural BUG Art can enter physical space through 3D printing and other fabrication methods, but materialization creates another question: how much of the digital structure can survive translation into matter?
Thin connections, open surfaces, unstable intersections, and complex structural details may require modification before fabrication.
For this reason, the digital model is not merely a preliminary step toward a physical sculpture. It can also exist as a complete sculptural state in its own right.
The relationship between digital structure and physical form remains part of the continuing research.
A LONG-TERM STRUCTURAL EVOLUTION
Structural BUG Art is not intended as a fixed visual style.
Its central principle is continued evolution: software failure is induced, manipulated, and transformed again; structures change across works, sequences, and cycles.
The forms visible now are not final answers. They are states within an ongoing sculptural process.
The question remains open:
Where can software failure take sculptural structure?
I intend to keep following that question.
